Oodle Etiquette

Fergusson Park is a brilliant resource, one that allows us to exercise and socialise our canine companions to their heart’s content.  However, it does come with its own set of unwritten rules. To clear up any confusion, we at Oodle HQ want to point out a few important rules.
Do compliment other people’s dogs.
Dog park people are proud people, so event if you don't like the look of someone else's dog, perhaps try saying “what a unique breed” or “hasn't he got a lot of energy” are your safe zone.

Don’t be precious.
Hysterically yelling “Whose dog is this?!” whenever the big labradoodle sniffs at your toy spoodle
is not cool.

Do bring your kids.
Kids are welcome.  However, be warned that little kids may get knocked over in the tornado of excited dog play, so please watch them.  Just like our furry friends - you bring 'em, you watch out for 'em.

Don't let your dog bully others.
If your pet is getting a little riled up, best distract him for a bit or pop him back on his lead.

Do ditch the lead when you join us.
One of the major perks of Fergusson Park is that your four-legged friend can roam free, as long as you have him/her under control.

Don’t bring your pup’s favourite toys or balls.
It’s a dog eat dog world in these parks, best belongings will more than likely get stolen.

Do be aware of other users of the park.
Fergusson Park is a space to be shared.  If there are other sports games or events on, please be aware of this and keep your dog near to where the group has set-up.

Don’t bring your brand new puppy along.
Yes they’re cute, yes we all want to play with them. They may get hurt.  Generally, we say four months and above is a good age for them to be able to interact well and have had some vaccinations.

Do intervene if Fido gets frisky.
We suggest distraction or taking a small time-out by putting your pooch back on the lead.  Let's keep things PG people.

Do pick up after your dog.
We really shouldn’t need to clear that one up… (Remember: Fergusson Park has dog bag stations (2) - no excuses people).

You are welcome to come along and 'dog stalk' or 'admire at other people's dogs' from a distance.  Obviously if you own a dog, bring your dog.  Or if you own a bunch of dogs, bring all of those dogs.

LASTLY:  Oodle takes no responsibility for anyone or any dog who attends our events.

Why it is important to socialise your dog

Opportunities to maintain social skills.
Dogs are like us, highly social animals, and many enjoy spending time with their own species. At the park, your dog gets practice reading a variety of other dogs’ body language and using her own communication skills, and gets used to meeting unfamiliar dogs on a frequent basis. These valuable experiences can help guard against the development of fear and aggression problems around other dogs.

Fun for the pawrents (that's you!)
Dogs aren’t the only ones who enjoy parks. People do, too. They can exercise their dogs without much effort, socialise with other dog lovers (especially 'oodles' ;-), bond and play with their dogs, practice their off-leash training skills, and enjoy the entertainment dogs bring.  Fun for all!
